How to Launch a Multifamily IoT Solution

The IoT market is booming and spreading from its origins in single-family homes. As exciting as this expansion is, this unfortunately means that some sites are installing this technology as Multifamily IoT with hasty adaptations from single-family IoT. This can present obstacles for Staff and Residents, and create infrastructure problems for years to come.

Single-family IoT applied as Multifamily IoT creates sites with no centralized platform and/or synchronicity. This is unnecessary and even dangerous from both infrastructure and cost perspectives.

What is an example of this? An example is hubs in every apartment unit with each Resident responsible for their own Wi-Fi service, which is not only a security issue, but also makes the IoT software and devices dependent on the Residents. One security concern is that residents or other people who have access to an apartment unit could accidentally or intentionally tamper with the hub as physical access to the hub removes basic security hurdles (making the network vulnerable to cyber attackers).  Read more about network-related security concerns here.

What does a successful Multifamily IoT solution look like?

Currently, the focus is on the operations side to enhance the Resident experience, help Property Owners increase closing ratios with competitive amenities, and promote the benefits of Smart Apartments and Intelligent Buildings. On top of these important qualities, a stellar IoT solutions provider must be an expert in construction as well. A company that only understands the IoT “widgets” installed is lacking in the bigger picture mindset.

In order to work effectively over a large number of units, the solutions provider must understand construction, networking, and frequencies in addition to technology to have the tools to overcome the most complicated obstacles that present themselves.

STRATIS addresses this market-wide problem by providing Developers, Managers, Owners, and General Contractors with the right guidance on these deployments from the architectural phase to lease up to ensure a scalable white glove delivery. With this expertise, properties are future-proofed and continue to run excellently after construction for years to come.
